Executive Editor Dawn Binkley
and Scott Carpenter
Hello, welcome to Table Talk Tuesday we are so very glad to have you with us. Hellfire Publishing would like to extend a warm welcome to Scott Carpenter
How are you doing today?
Groovy
Editor: You have a story with Hellfire Publishing entitled Angel’s Blood. What is that about?
It’s about a middle aged priest who falls in love with a young girl when she comes to him for help in getting away from her drug dealer boyfriend. When the boyfriend kills the girl for leaving him the priest decides to take the law into his own hands.
Editor: What made you choose that title?
The first imagery in the story is the blood of the girl, Angel, running down a storm sewer on a city street. It just felt like it fit perfectly, straight to the point.
Editor: Where did the idea for your story come from?
I wrote the opening line for the story in 1995 and almost immediately lost the paper. When I was preparing in 1999 to write my first novel I remembered the opening line and just let the story flow. I really didn’t think about where I was going, I was just making sure I had the chops to write the novel that was in my head. The story sat on my hard drive for years until I found Hellfire Publishing. Everyone I let read the story raved about it and they all expressed the desire to read an expanded version of the story. They wanted to know more about the priest. That kind of reaction made me want to find it a home.
Editor: What made you choose Hellfire Publishing?
Hellfire is an extremely author friendly publisher because the people running it are authors themselves. There is a level of understanding between writers as compared to writers and the strictly business types. And of course, I loved the name. Anyone who knows me would agree that I belong with a company called Hellfire.
Editor: Please share a particular detail about one of characters, please.
The priest has lost his faith in the face of so much evil and injustice. The death of Angel was just the final straw. He still believes in God, but is coming to hate Him.
Editor: Please tell us about any future projects you are planning.
I’m currently writing a full length novel expansion of the Angel’s Blood short story. While I work on that my children’s book is on hold. I was about halfway finished with it when the novel idea came to life.
Editor: Are you currently running any contests? What are they?
I don’t have any current contests, but I like the idea. Maybe a knife fight? Winner gets a free copy?
Editor add in: Or maybe Russian roulette, lol.
Editor: How many books have you written?
I have previously self-published two comedic novels, Mr. Undesirable and Picking On Retards. Mr. Undesirable is about Lenny Kapowski, a dirt poor, foul mouthed, porn addicted, binge drinking malcontent who wins $158 million in a lottery and uses the money to get revenge on the people who treated him badly when he was poor. Picking On Retards stars Butchie, the bouncer from Lenny’s favorite strip club from Mr. U. It takes place in 1988 when Butchie was the high school football star and was caught picking on a retarded kid in the hall at school. Instead of kicking him off the team they make him babysit/bodyguard the kid for the rest of the season. Despite the offensive title it’s actually an extremely positive story.
Editor: We have a special place for unpublished writers in our hearts, here at Hellfire Publishing. So what advice would you give to an unpublished writer?
Writing is work as well as fun. Do the work. Read continuously, not just for enjoyment, but to see how other writers handle language, story, character, etc. When you think you’ve got it, start submitting and listen to the feedback. Constantly allow yourself to evolve.
Editor: Are you only with Hellfire Publishing or do write for other publisher’s as well?
Hellfire is it. Other than that I self-publish.
One lucky commenter will win a free e-copy of Angel’s Blood.
On a lonely street a girl is murdered in front of a church. No one comes forward, and even if there are any witnesses they won’t talk to the police, not in this cesspool of a city. But one man did see what happened. A man who cared for her and was willing to risk everything for her. To give up all he has known. Perhaps, his very soul.
Her priest.
He knows who killed her. He knows why. The police either can’t or won’t do anything about it. Her killer, the king of the streets, is untouchable.
Watching his faith die on the sidewalk beside her, a decision is made that will change his life forever. When a man of the church turns his back on God and takes action, her killer will find that he’ll have hell to pay.

ReplyDeleteYour work sounds very intriguing, Scott and I look forward to reading it. I too enjoy and love working for a company that is owned by an author. Our Boss, understands a great deal more about what her peeps are dealing with then those who run a company but have never been on the other side.
Proud to be a fellow author with you at HP!!!
