Interview between Hellfire Publishing executive editor, Dawn Binkley and Kevin James Breaux.
Hello, welcome to Table Talk Tuesday we are so very glad to have you with us. Hellfire Publishing would like to extend a warm welcome to Kevin James Breaux.
How are you doing today? Great, thanks! Always happy to hang out with the Hellfire folks.
Editor: You have a story coming out soon though Hellfire Publishing entitled Dark Water: Beaming Smile.
Editor: What is that about?
Kevin: Well, without spoiling it… the story is a horror-thriller about a woman trying to escape her past during a devastating flood.
Editor Reply: Sounds awesome!
Editor: What made you choose that title?
Kevin: I wanted to contrast the two plots; one being the dark flood waters that surround the main characters house, the other the girl who washes up on her property. I am very careful with my titles and try my hardest to make them just as interesting as the works themselves.
Editor Reply: So it sucks when word programs and editors accidentally call it Black Water, right? lol J *Blushes*
Editor: Where did the idea for your story come from?
Kevin: To be honest this is one of those moments where I just sat down one day and started writing. Next thing I knew I had an interesting concept. I decided to polish it up and work on the voice. I finished the final draft a week or so later. So where did it come from? The depths of my wicked imagination, I guess.
Editor Reply: Great answer, I like that.
Editor: What made you choose Hellfire Publishing?
Kevin: I liked what Hellfire was doing, and wanted to impress them with a story I was really proud of. Hellfire felt like the right home for Dark Water, and I knew they would take care of it. We make a good team.
Editor Reply: Oh yes, we do!
Editor: Please tell us about any future projects you are planning.
Kevin: I am just finishing up a new book about a woman from the Viking era who is displaced a hundred or so years forward. She does not believe the people she meets when they tell her that her homelands are gone; she thinks it’s all a trap. Soon she discovers her sister and then learns the truth. I don’t want to give anything away. If you read my work you know I like my twists and turns.
Editor Reply: We love twists and turns.
Editor: How many books have you written?
Kevin: I have completed four books so far and will be finishing the fifth one soon. SOUL BORN was my debut novel last year and is book one in the Soul Born Saga (now available). BLOOD DIVIDED is book two in the Soul Born Saga and will be out this winter. ONE SMOKING HOT FAIRY TAIL is an urban fantasy novel that begins a big series that I am in love with writing and the Viking one I mentioned above… I am seeking an agent for these two.
Dark Water: Beaming Smile is a novelette. Which is new to me, I normally write longer works.
Editor Reply: Me too, I have started some short stories and I am sooo confused, lol.
Editor: We have a special place for unpublished writers in our hearts, here at Hellfire Publishing. So what advice would you give to an unpublished writer?
Kevin: If you are a fiction writer then you should be writing fiction daily. Try not to get too involved in the whole social media circus until after you are published. Just because you finish one book does not mean you can stop, while submitting book one… write book two.
Editor Reply: That is a piece of advice, I quite often give out myself, if you’re a writer—write. And the rest will fall into place.
Editor: Are you only with Hellfire Publishing or do write for other publisher’s as well?
Kevin: I write for Dark Quest Books too. They publish the books in the Soul Born Saga.
Editor Reply: Very cool. I have heard great things about Dark Quest books.
Editor: Can you share your blurb with us?
Sarah should have left Montgomery County when she had the chance, but now it's too late. She is trapped on the rooftop of her family home which is almost completely submerged by dark flood waters. The air smells of a mixture of sewage and mold and it’s still raining. Alone with only her thoughts Sarah is mad she did not leave town years ago when she was right out of high school, before she became the one things she dreaded most; her mother.
Haunted by the reoccurrence of an eerie thumping sound, Sarah is startled when she discovers a large hairy animal, almost the size of a cow, brushing against the corner of her house. What is it? Where did it come from? What other horrors are hiding in the dark water?
One lucky commenter will win a free e-copy of Dark Water: Beaming Smile, when it is released, October 5, 2011
