Interview between Dawn Binkley, Executive Editor of
Hellfire Publishing and Author J. Gunn (Jen)
Hello, welcome to One
on One Wednesday, we are so very glad to have you with us. The Hellfire Herald
would like to extend a warm welcome to J. Gunn.
How are you doing today?
Jen: I'm doing all right, it's been
a long summer but I'm glad it's over and things are looking up.
Dawn: You have a story coming out soon through
self-publishing entitled
Devil's in the Details. What is that
about?
Jen: This is an anthology of my
short horror stories. A collection I've been working on for two years now of
some scary stuff that might melt someone's brains lol!
Dawn:
What made you choose that title?
Jen: Demons, evil, horror,
blood...you name it. I chose it because it suited the grouping of stories.
Dawn:
What is your preferred genre to write in?
Jen: Horror/Dark Fantasy of course.
:)
Dawn:
Are you with an Indy publisher, a traditional house or self- published?
Jen: This one I did solely on my
own, self-published.
Dawn:
Please tell us about any future projects you are planning.
Jen: Well there is the upcoming
children's book for my daughter, the new novel I'm working on (planning on
having the first draft pretty well done by mid-November), I have also got about
three other novels still in the works and a poetry anthology I'm still working
on getting out there.
Dawn:
How many books have you written?
Jen: I've completed two, working on
a third for that series now. And several others. The one anthology is finished
and I hope to have the other anthology of my poetry out soon.
Dawn:
Do you work at job outside the home or is this your only career?
Jen: I'm an agent and editor
alongside writing, how many careers does one person need? LOL!
Dawn:
Do you have a special writing method?
Jen: Yes, I never write without
music. Also, I'm usually in my jammies and can't get the characters out of my
head. They bother me until I write their scenes. I don't always have a title
when I start either. Sometimes it comes later when I've gotten a lot of the
words down.
Dawn: We have a
special place for unpublished writers in our hearts, here at the Hellfire
Herald. So what advice would you give to an unpublished writer?
Jen: I say
this with gusto, never stop! Never! Eventually it will lead somewhere, maybe
not where you first pictured but somewhere!
Let’s get personal…
Dawn: Are you married?
Jen: No
I'm surely not. LOL!
Dawn: Do you have
children?
Jen: I
have two, a 15 year old boy and a 7 year old girl.
Dawn: What’s your
favorite thing to do?
Jen:
Writing of course, research and learning, all while having my tunes in my ears.
Dawn: Are you a
reader?
Jen:
Absolutely, kind of have to be in this business.
Dawn: Tell us
something special about you.
Jen:
Special about me, hmm. Well I love people, helping people, especially children
when I am able to. And as you know, cancer holds a high place in my heart so I
combine the two when I'm able.
Dawn: Can you tell us
a secret?
Jen: I
also write a bit of erotica when I take the notion to.
Dawn: Do you judge a
book by its cover?
Jen: No,
sometimes the person (i.e. writer) has other intentions and their vision might
not have been realized properly or there is a possibility that's what they
think shock factor is. Sometimes the book (or person, because this can also be
said of people as well) may not look that cool but inside is something
worthwhile.
Dawn: What is your
motto?
Jen: I
have many but one that I use to get through rough times is one my dad says, he
says when you think you have it hard look at someone else, other people may
have it worse than you. And he's right, it also stems from not judging others,
we don't know what battle they might be fighting.
Dawn: What do you
think you will be doing five years from now?
Jen:
Hopefully I will have written my epic masterpiece sitting in a big comfy chair
lol! Who knows, maybe I will have most everything I ever wanted...having
entertained and scared over half the world's population lol! (At least that's
my goal!)
Dawn: What is your Ideal vacation spot?
Jen:
Anywhere I don't have to do anything but just be there. No worries about
anything or anyone.
Dawn: Scary Movies or
Happy Endings?
Jen: Well
this is obvious, scary movies of course! :)
Dawn: Can you share your
blurb with us?
What’s
more tantalizing or titillating on Halloween then bloody corpses, living
nightmares, or hatchets used to cut you to pieces? Inside this anthology you
will find more than ones fair share of gore, and atrophy. Don’t blame me for what
enters your dreams.
